The construction of a new solar farm in regional New South Wales marks NBN Co’s commitment to 100% renewable electricity purchases from December 2025.

NBN Co chief development officer regional and remote Gavin Williams and Minister for Communications Michelle Rowland graced a turning ceremony to kickstart work on the 260-hectare solar farm near Wyalong, NSW.

Power generation is expected to begin in late 2022 and electricity generated will be enough to power the equivalent of 27,000 Australian homes, claims NBN Co.

NBN’s first Renewable Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) has powered the construction of the solar farm.

NBN Co has contracted to take approximately 80 GWh per year or more than 50% of the expected power generated by the solar farm.

This equates to approximately 55% of NBN’s energy consumption in NSW and 19% of its national energy consumption.

The solar farm will feature approximately 127,000 solar panels once complete. The construction phase is expected to create 150 local jobs.

NBN Co announced its Towards Zero carbon ambition including a commitment to buy 100% renewable electricity from December 2025 to December 2021.

NBN Co’s membership in the global RE100 renewable energy initiative supports its 100% renewables commitment.

NBN Co claims to be the first Australian telecommunication company and the first Australian government business enterprise to do so.

It is also part of a growing number of companies committed to set science-based emissions reduction targets via the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

The company joins more than 2,000 leading companies worldwide targeting Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions.

The company expects to provide its science-based targets to the SBTi for validation later this year.

“It’s particularly pleasing that we are moving from ambition to action and demonstrating through deeds rather than words, our commitment to reduce emissions and support the nation’s transition to a net-zero carbon economy,” said NBN Co chief regional and remote development officer Gavin Williams .

“As we deliver on our company purpose to lift the digital capability of Australia not only are we aligning with the latest climate science we are also playing a role in helping support climate technologies and the livelihoods of people working in new energy jobs,” Williams said .
